Depression is a common mental health condition that affects multiple facets of a person’s daily life. It is more than temporary sadness, and it can interfere with work, relationships, sleep, and physical health. People who live with depression often experience a persistent low mood that lasts for weeks or longer. Knowing the signs and understanding the treatment options can help you get the care you need. Here is more information about depression and how to get help:

    What Causes Depression?

Depression does not have a single cause. Researchers point to a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors that can contribute to its development. A person may have a family history of the condition, or sometimes stressful life events trigger symptoms. Brain chemistry also plays a role because certain neurotransmitters help regulate mood. Hormonal changes, chronic illness, and substance use can influence how a person feels over time. These factors often interact, and no two people experience the exact same set of causes.

    What Are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of depression vary from person to person, but several patterns tend to appear across many cases. Common symptoms of depression include:

    • Persistent sad or empty mood
    • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
    • Otherwise unexplained changes in appetite or weight
    • Sleep disturbances and insomnia
    • Fatigue and low energy
    • Trouble concentrating
    • Difficulty making decisions
    • Headaches
    • Thoughts of death or self-harm

    What Medications Treat Depression?

Several classes of medication are used to manage depressive disorders, and a psychiatrist helps patients select one for their unique needs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, often called SSRIs, are among the most frequently prescribed options. These are medications that work to adjust the balance of certain chemicals in the brain.

Other categories include serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, atypical antidepressants, and tricyclic antidepressants. A doctor may adjust the dosage over time because each person responds differently. Regular follow-up appointments help track progress and manage any side effects; you should talk to your provider before stopping a prescribed medication. Antidepressants can have side-effects if stopped too suddenly.

    What Other Actions Improve Depression?

A combination of approaches is typically most effective for many patients when treating depression. Along with medication, several strategies may support a person’s overall well-being:

    • Psychotherapy: Provides a structured way to explore thoughts and develop healthy coping skills.
    • Lifestyle habits: Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and consistent sleep routines can all support recovery from depression.
    • Social connection: Building a reliable support network can make a meaningful difference in a person’s ability to cope with depression.
    • Mindfulness and self-care practices: Journaling, mindfulness exercises, or joining a support group can complement a broader care plan, though they do not replace professional treatment.

Some people do not respond fully to standard treatments, and this is known as treatment-resistant depression. In these cases, transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS therapy, may offer another option worth exploring. Often a combination of therapies is most effective for depression and other mental health issues. If you want to learn more about treatments for depressive disorders, schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist today.
